What is wellness?

If I were to ask you “What is Wellness?’, what would be your answer?

Perhaps you think of wellness as just feeling well, in other words free from illness, aches and pains.

Perhaps you view wellness as eating well and exercising, generally taking care of your body.

Feeling well, eating well and exercise will affect our overall wellness, but there are so many other factors to consider.

Looking at the Whole Picture

It’s important to look at the whole picture to identify how one area of your life may be affecting another area. This is what we call taking an ‘Holistic Approach’

There are so many things that can affect our wellness including:

  • the food we eat
  • the way we move our body
  • what we drink
  • how we sleep
  • our relationships with others
  • our jobs / careers
  • our finances
  • our mindset

Let me give you an example to show you how one part of your life can affect another.

This example is from many years ago when I was signed off work long term with stress, (the areas of my life affected are highlighted in bold).

It was my CAREER that was the main problem, causing me chronic stress. This had a knock on effect to my BODY, for example, I developed irritable bowel syndrome, this affected the FOOD that I was eating. I had headaches every single day for over two years, I had other body aches and pains. How I was feeling in my body affected my RELATIONSHIPS because I was barely functioning on a day to day basis and my moods changed so quickly! My sleep was affected which meant I wasn’t getting the REST that I needed and the list goes on and on.

This is just a very brief overview of the areas that were impacting my overall wellness, but I think it really demonstrates how one thing in our life can have a huge impact on another!

Making Changes

I have made many changes over the years, so I know that when we change one area of our life, we see other areas change, and when we struggle in one area, we often see a direct impact up another area.

Knowing how everything is connected helps us to better prepare ourselves for creating more balance and lasting change.

Can you identify any areas in your life that feel out of balance? To help get the ideas flowing take a look at the list below as these can be indicators that things are out of balance.

Perhaps you would like:

  • To have more energy
  • To have a clear mind and to be able to think straight
  • To feel less stressed
  • To have improved focus and concentration
  • A positive state of mind
  • Fewer aches and pains
  • A better nights sleep.

Identifying these areas is the first step to identifying and recognising that things perhaps aren’t as they should be. I think we are all guilty of telling ourselves ‘that’s just life’ but it really isn’t. We do have a choice and the power is in our hands to make the changes

Perhaps you can think of other things that need to be addressed that aren’t on this list?

If you’ve made your list and don’t know what to do with it, then please stay tuned because I am writing this blog as I train to be a Certified Wellness Coach.
